Re: How marketable are we?

You never know until you try. When I first started this adventure I wasn’t sure of my marketability with a trailing spouse, 2 dependents and no international experience. After sending 40 resumes and 4 interviews I ended up with 3 offers. No job fair was needed. I’ll be at a top school in a county that I never anticipated but am thrilled about. My advice is to jump in feet first. Make a short list of non negotiable requirements. For me it was low pollution, politically stable, access to good healthcare. Apply to any and all countries that fit the bill and see where the path leads. Good luck!

Re: How do your kids/students adjust with a 95% local/5% Nor

The city is Shenzhen so there are hopefully many opportunities outside of school for them to socialize with English speakers. We’ve asked them how they feel about it. My 12 year old son is all for it. My 10 year old daughter is not quite as excited. This is a tough choice but the advice we’ve received has been helpful.

How do your kids/students adjust with a 95% local/5% North A

Newbie here. ..I’ve been offered a position in an intriguing city in China with a fantastic salary package. My only concern is that 95% of the school population is made up of local Chinese students. My 10 & 12 year old will be part of that small 5%. I was hoping for a school with a more international population but this position is too interesting to not give it strong consideration. Although the kids are flexible, adventurous and accepting, I’m worried this could be a too challenging. They have never lived abroad. Have any of you parents been in a similar situation? How did your kids handle it? Teachers- from your perspective, how does this play out in your classroom? Of course, all kids handle things differently, but I’d love to hear any and all perspectives.

p.s. This forum has been wonderful for a new IT beginning the adventure of a lifetime. Thank you for all the solid advice!

Vacancy follow up? Opinions needed

Can a newbie here get your expert opinions?

I applied for a high school math position in Vietnam through Schrole. It's a school and country at the top of my wish list. No response from the school yet and the closing deadline on the posting has been extended several times since I applied. I have no IT experience, master’s degree, 15 years of math teaching in the US (AP not IB), a non-teaching trailing spouse + 2 school aged kids. I realize I’m a risky and expensive hire.

Here’s my question…should I email the principal directly outside of Schrole and offer to pay for airfare for my dependents? I don’t want to appear desperate. But I do want to show that I’m eager and flexible and possibly get a second glance to my resume. Is this too forward and possibly annoying, especially so early in the hiring season?

Thoughts?

Is IB more important than AP?

I'm just starting to research a career in international education. I have over 17 years of AP high school math-calculus, algebra, the good stuff. Is this enough to find a job in SE Asia? Or, Do I need to focus on IB Training before applying?

Thanks!
