Re: and it continues

Living in China I'm surprised more schools have not done this. No-one expects the borders to be open until at least October and possibly longer. I know of at least one school that let go of their incoming and current staff abroad a month ago. My school is replacing teachers one by one. I have spoken to a few very well known schools are planning to keep their staff until borders open and hire subs, but I wonder how long that can go on. Are other countries starting to let go of all staff abroad? I heard a schools in Thailand, Vietnam and Abu Dhabi that are cutting new hires because of budget, but I've only heard of schools in China that are also letting go of existing staff who are abroad.

Re: How does 3 years at one school look?

I keep hearing top tier schools don't like short term contracts from teachers and this forum. My experience may be unique and I could have just been lucky, but I interviewed with several tier 1 schools and was hired at a top tier school and none of them seemed to care at all that I never worked past my initial contract. Only one school asked about it and responded positively to my answer granting a second interview that I eventually couldn't take. I was very worried that having three short term jobs would hurt my chances, but at least for me it wasn't the case at all. I plan to stay at my next school for a very long time.

Re: Current 2019 list of countries with best savings potenti

Vietnam and Cambodia are cheap. South Korea has very good savings potential at the higher paying schools.

Re: Is Search still worth it?

I think the obvious answer is it depends. I was all in on this job search and signed up with Search, ISS, and GRC. I signed up with Search because a few schools I was interested in use Search as their primary way of applying, and if we struck out in the early recruiting time period we would have gone to the Search Bangkok fair. There are some good jobs that are not listed on search that I found on ISS and GRC. If you are not planning on going to a Search fair and don't want those few specific schools that only use Search than I wouldn't bother. The database is nice, but not worth the price tag imo.

A lot of schools are hiring early which is why we love the GRC. However, we talked to other candidates at the GRC who were not successful (couple with non-teaching spouse). If I had to do it again I would have waited to sign up with Search after the GRC fair.

Re: Best Job Fair to Land a Tier 1 School

My wife and I landed a tier 1 school at the GRC fair. The schools we interviewed with, all tier 1, said they wanted to finish hiring before Christmas break. Maybe our experience was unique, but for the record we do not teach hard to fill positions or have a ton of experience.

Re: Questions Regarding Teacher Ready Program

I went through the Teacher Ready program and know of many (at least 5) international teachers who did the program. Yes, it was easy. I took all the tests before the program started and had no issue. However, I don't think the training program you take determines whether or not you will be a good teacher. Just be thankful its cost effective and quick, and if you feel its not enough get a masters (from a different program). That's what I did.

Re: Internship Abroad vs 2 Years Domestic Teaching

I started as a paid intern. Every intern I knew was able to land a job abroad after their year or two as an intern. I got a job through a contact at that school, many others went to a fair, and a few got a job through Skype. We were able to land solid jobs, a mix of tier 2 and 3 schools with locations all over the place. Many of us were getting our certification or masters while working as interns. We tended to fit into different categories; transitioning ESL teachers (a decent chunk of us), brand new teachers(smallest group), spouses interested in eventually getting their own classroom, and locals who had international experience in one way or another. I enjoyed my experience, although it can be frustrating at times working so closely with another teacher and the salary is less than half of a full time teacher.

Re: Best place for a couple with young child

Chadwick, in Songdo, South Korea. It is extremely safe, full of parks, and a great place for families. The school provides large apartments and hires teachers with dependents. The salary is also good enough to support families.

Re: Should I stay or should I go?

Tough call. I'm in a very similar situation and will likely stay to finish my masters before looking for my next position. However, seeing that you don't really want to stay and are more so worried about finding a worse place I suggest leaving. You will probably find a better place because you are more experienced, have a clearer picture of what you want/don't want, and you can get started finding your next position early. Best of luck.

Re: Best plan for starting in international teaching

I completed Teacher Ready last year and now I'm teaching primary years at what people would call a tier 2 school. I know a few others who have done the same. The only thing I can recommend is to do your student teaching at a PYP school (or another popular curriculum) and make contacts while you are there. I would wait until later to get a masters.

Re: What's it like at the bottom of the barrel?

I can't say I read every post, but I can say go for it. I was once an ESL teacher, and where I am now is much better. I went through the TR program, and know other people who have been successful with it as well. I also know other teachers who were once ESL teachers years ago and are very happy they made the transition.

Re: Placement firms for Korea

This question would be better suited for Daves ESL, but I would use the search because that question has probably been asked and answered a 100 times (http://www.eslcafe.com/). Also I think Korvia only works with public schools, and its kinda of pointless to use an agency to apply for public schools. Applying direct is faster, and everything they do you can with an internet search. If he is looking for an after school academy job then he should use many recruiters.

You can do it that way, but I think it would be better to work in a hagwon and student teach at an international school. I didn't resign at a good public school and chose to work at a hagwon so I could get experience at an international school. Even though the hagwon job was less than ideal I would do it the same way again because I learned so much that I wouldn't have the other way, and it help me land a good job.

Yeah, I saw one school pop up within the last seven days.
