Re: When does the line in the sand get crossed

At my school, we pair incoming teachers with 1 or 2 colleagues that teach in the same grade or department, where they can ask questions as needed. That allows the incoming teacher to decide how involved they want to be--but for me, I can't start up a new job in March while I'm trying to end well where I'm at! I don't mind a quick bio and I have followed the school on FB, etc. just to get a feel of the place, but it's all me-driven. Internationally, schools should expect their teachers to hit the ground running based on what they've learned AFTER they've finished their current school, unless the circumstances indicate something else. I'm moving to a coordinator position next year in my new school, so I have had to make time to get on board with some aspects of my new school, but if I were moving to another teaching role, no way.

Re: Post age on resume?

No pictures, no age. Schools can guesstimate your age by a lot of other things on your cv. Pictures give a snap first impression (positive or negative) that you may not want.

Re: Timeline After Applying

I wouldn't hold to what Search said. Schools are gung-ho to collect CVs as early as possible along the way, but some will act on files they are excited about right away...others will collect but then wait until their "deadline" to see what they've go to work with. My experience is that if you are really interesting to them, you'll hear pretty quickly (we just were contacted 6 hours after we submitted an application--and we just got a "no thanks" 2 weeks after applying to another school). Mentally, we apply at schools we are really interested in, and then we need to shake it off--we've done our part, and as much as we might love a school, we ned to keep moving on and applying. We can't wait for a school to respond.

The "Christian faith" school...I know which one you are referring to. I know several people who have worked there, most of whom are not practicing Christians, and a couple that were pretty anti-religion. It's not a faith-based school in that you have to have an active practicing faith...you would have to support the ethos of the school, which wouldn't be too difficult.

Flexibility on age limits in China?

My husband and I are experienced international educators. We have been in China before and would not mind going back. Unfortunately, we are bumping up against the age restrictions. We are looking for 1 last post for the next 4-5 years and wondering if schools would have any flexibility with that age restriction given the challenges of hiring in China right now. Anyone have any information?

As PsyGuy said, it was affiliated with a public school district, so I was, in effect, an employee of that school district. Families can uses K-12 independently--for MN, because it was public school affiliated, all the materials and computer were free to families (I'm not sure if it's the same), and we had to participate in things like MAP testing as required by public schools.

Re: virtual teaching positions in USA?

I worked for the Minnesota Virtual Academy before I came overseas. It's a program called K-12. It was affiliated with a public school district, so in effect I was hired by the district, but I lived and worked from my home a couple hours away. I was the special ed teacher for the Twin Cities, so i did a combination of virtual teaching/consulting and some home-based visits for students that had more significant needs. It was a pretty sweet deal. The K-12 company operates in several states, some independently and some affiliated with school districts, in effect it was public schooling done at home. Hope that helps.

Re: International teacher Marc Fogel in Russian prison - please help!

Yes. While we all know the risks and dangers inherent in interpreting country's rules...it seems as if this teacher did understand the parameters. He didn't try to sneak something in. He was able to provide ample medical support for his need. It wasn't his "first rodeo." We can be completely transparent...and a government can choose their own reaction.

Re: When to announce a departure

I would say tell your admin by the deadline. Easy, peasy. At the schools I've worked at, people who are committed have let their admin know much earlier, but you (of course) need to know that your school is going to act with integrity and not screw you bc you told them earlier.

Re: US Parent Teaching Abroad/ In-State Tuition

Yes, we did. Minnesota. We do own a house there and pay state and property taxes and have records of all our bills. It varies a lot from state to state, though...he looked at Utah (very easy to get residency) and Iowa (couldn't do it). In some cases, it's the family that matters and if they meet qualifications, in others it's the student themselves. The age of the student may matter, too, as in is the student a dependent or used as a tax deduction.

Re: US Citizen - Retirement Saving...?

Find a financial advisor that knows foreign income. We have Roth IRAs and we save like mad. As always (and it's usually not much help by the time a person asks for it) people need to start saving in their 20s. We are a dual teaching couple, 25 years in the US (public schools) and now 15 years overseas (3 of those as missionaries) and we have more than enough for retirement, as well as putting 3 kids through college debt-free. Living overseas massively helped, but it was starting when we got married (22) that really gave us the headstart.

The fact that Harvard is attached to it will garner a 2nd look. Like most PD or additional degrees (and, I suppose, in other areas) it's not what you have, it's how you use it.

Re: Asking for reviews to be removed

As an adult and professional....we have to temper our actions. You admittedly wrote and fired it off and then had regrets. Understandable...but as adults and professionals....you write it on a google doc. You acted on impulse and now there are consequences. Hopefully, your identity will remain anonymous, but lesson learned. Stay away from a keyboard in the moment. Hope you dodged this bullet.

Re: Updating of CV Information

I've never included any of that, except for a photo (and now I'm thinking of not doing that because of my age--although I look younger than I am). In my cover letter I've always mentioned that my husband also applying for a job (and when I had kids along I mentioned them as well (generally, as kids who are adventurous and involved. I figured they can look at my CV--my teaching history, my education, and can figure out my nationality. I know that's not true for everyone, so maybe nationality might be useful.

Re: Delta variant and in-person vs. online openings

We're opening 100% in person. Most of our staff will be fully vaxxed by the end of August and many of our families/teens are likely to be. Only staff, faculty, and students on campus (no parents/drivers/nannies). Everyone has to pass a COVID test given Fri/Sat. Masks on everyone, social distancing in classrooms, contact tracing in indoor setting. Dual sync is an option but it seems like we're discouraging it as a choice (keeping it for immunocompromised families). We had really good luck last year with our system so I feel pretty comfortable with starting up--and excited to see the kids again!
