If this is the case and your current school has a strong MYP programme, then it should be fine. Anyway, I think you have to roll with it if other factors make it the right move for your family.

Non-judgemental.
Passionate.
Empathetic.
Abrasive.
Know when to be lazy.
Know when to work their socks off.
Know when to take short cuts.
Know when to pay attention to detail.
Salt of the Earth with the occasional mood or grump.
Give back at least some of what they take.

Something like that.

Got to Bangkok. You can get into HK last minute - you can even sign up for it at the Bangkok fair.

Re: Pay: British Schools vs International Schools

As sid said, piece of string. In some cities the biggest payer is an American school, in others it's a British school and in others still it's an "International" one. This is changing. In recent years, international schools have been opening up left, right and centre and many of them have a "British" curriculum and "British" in their name because of the perceived standards, currency and credibility - at least to the new rich in the developing world. All of these schools are for-profit. So on average, yes British schools pay less. But in terms of the old guard, its a piece of string.

Re: Reference Checks

Top two or three. Increasingly three these days as it covers their back a bit more if they get it wrong (which they will do at some point, way it goes). A skilled recruiter who knows the candidate is good should be able to secure a good reference from the current principal/head and at least one other of note.

Re: Which tier - 2 or 3?

Not enough info. Which continent and which part of that continent. And is it a capital/major city?

Re: Interview Questions for Counselor position

There is an alternative to giving them what they want. It's telling them who you are. That way you get the employer that suits you. The reality is of course that the middle ground is where it's at - but don't sell yourself down the river before you even arrive at the place.

Re: Annual contract to include summer

Why on earth would an employer pay you beyond the end of your contract? Wouldn't it have been better to negotiate with your next employer and see if you could start the contract earlier?

Re: Savings?

There are a handful (well maybe a bit more) of schools where you can save 3000USD per month - listening to teachers at those schools for advice is a fruitless exercise unless you actually work at those places for a stretch. The reality is that teaching is not a moneybags profession anywhere in the world. Internationally, you can live the life of Riley and save as much as you could have done at home if you had had no life whatsoever outside of school. Or a bit more.

But then there are also international teachers who have been "lifers" in less financially celubrious locations who are happy 'til their dying day.

If you want to save a ton then do one of two things:

1) save regularly however much you can (could be 100 per month in some locations and 3000 in others) and put it into something that is an investment (could be property for example),

2) quit teaching and get a job that people do for money (any half decent teacher is intelligent enough to do this if they are that way inclined).

Neither. Keep looking. Something much better will come up. You are aiming far too low.
