Re: Non-Negotiables

If they promise you something specifically during the interview, ask them to include it in the contract. Mere words will do no good to you.

AI and Future Job Security

With the advent of sophisticated AI-enabled tutors into the market, how concerned are you about keeping your job? Do you think parents will home school their kids using these chatbots? I'm aware home schooling is not permitted by federal governments in certain countries.
Would future automation of educational systems make school administrators (principals and deputy principals) redundant?

Re: What's more valuable...

Content knowledge and your knack of explaining clearly; Here's a thought experiment, with the best and worst-case scenarios depending on the perspective: picture yourself teaching a higher-level math class. You're standing in front of a group of gifted students with strong mental math abilities, individuals who have spent years in enrichment classes. It won't go well if you consistently make mistakes and then present them with challenging tests, expecting excellent results.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, you must explain concepts clearly for students who believe they can handle rigorous courses with the guidance of their teacher's expertise.

Re: Integrity

Sounds familiar, heard similar rumblings about an elite school in SE Asia. By writing a review, you will be saving a lot of grief for many folks who think elite schools are all roses and sunshine, which are truly not.

@ booboo14
Your answer is useful and I appreciate it. I guess it's all about trade-offs and requires some luck to end up in the right school or country or even both.

Asia to Europe

With rising housing costs, heightened pollution and kids tuition being taxed in many parts of Asia, would you consider moving to Eastern or Western Europe for your next job?

Student Behaviour

As educators, we all understand the critical importance of good behavior for effective learning. What measures has your school's leadership undertaken to reinforce positive behavior and compliance with rules? Please do not name any specific schools.

Re: Stories of Success

- What do you not miss about your old school/situation?
Covering lessons of absentee teachers and serving on umpteen committees, but I do miss compassion and humanity towards students and colleagues at my old school.

- What is your favorite thing about your new school/situation?
Low taxes and cost of living

- What advice would you give to colleagues who might be not sure about moving on, but know it is probably better for their emotional/mental health?

Don't move on in a rush. You might end up in a situation worse than where you are now both psychologically and financially. If the admin promises something major during an interview, ask them to put it in the contract. Ask questions about small things related to support systems, PD budget, curriculum, assessment, grade inflation, parental pressure, attitudes of counsellors and middle leaders (some of them are real bullies), etc. as these issues will affect your daily well being than the pay check.

Re: Where have people done online Master in Education and Leadership.

Is there an accredited and inexpensive EdD that is completely online and can be done in three years? Thanks.

Re: Who is actively looking?

People fleeing China and a host of other countries are making the search process quite competitive. Good schools are taking their sweet time to find the right fit. Math/physics/comp sci teachers I know of have already signed their new contracts.

Re: SA Bangkok Fair - Still worth it?

Define worth. If you are an IB HL math and/or physics/computer science teacher or a teaching couple with stellar CVs and over 10 yrs of experience, you might stand a chance. For a single teacher who mostly worked at lower end schools and not so impressive CV may not have a great outcome. It all comes down to who you are and what you can offer. Again, veteran math and physics teachers rarely attend job fairs. They sign new contracts way before the job fairs.

Re: ASIJ

There is a great sense of entitlement resulting from position, pay check, job security, school reputation, and being buddies with executive leadership. Ivy League professors and administrators have greater humility than these guys. Had a similar experience myself many moons ago when I interviewed for a junior admin position with a Lasallian catholic school in SG. The guy had half his shirt unbuttoned with his feet on the table and was yawning throughout the interview. Sources say the guy now runs a school in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.

Re: Principal Salary - Dubai

100 - 200K GBP per annum depending on the school size, responsibilities, your credentials, and experience. As per the new UAE labor law, the contract length can't exceed 3 years.
