Re: Singapore Cost of Living and Salaries
First off, you made a fine choice. Singapore is a great place to work and live. 10,000 - 12,000- SG dollars gross per month is a decent sum inclusive of housing allowance. That's what a tier 1 school pays for a mid-career teacher. You can make a bit more if you coach a sport or head a department. The trickiest part is the health insurance and even the best schools offer an okay insurance and healthcare in Singapore can be expensive if you have to top it up.

Re: If not in your home country, then where do you plan to retire?
My philosophy is to work in Asia and retire somewhere decent, an hour or so from the coast and a big city (healthcare will be critical). Panama, Portugal, Thailand, and Vietnam sound realistic, but if money isn't a problem, it's gonna be South of France.

Based on quality of life, although Chiangmai can be a bummer in the first 3 months of the year:
Basel, Switzerland
Chiangmai, Thailand
Rome, Italy
Singapore
Toulouse, France
All of these are doable and if you're a teacher couple, you'd save well, too even after splurging a bit.

Re: Salaries in Bangkok
The problem with Thailand is its currency, which appreciated significantly against Western currencies, nearly 15%, over the past 5 years. Another reason why pensioners moved to Cambodia and Vietnam (of course, the ever-changing immigration rules being another reason).
The golden ticket is to break into an admin position and with a compensation of over 300K Thai baht plus benefits per month, you can live like a true expat.

Don't have Luxembourg on my list and I wouldn't work there. Lousy place and lousy people. I_B, please double check before you make sweeping statements.

Re: Salaries in Bangkok
5 - 6K US plus housing & benefits at the top 2 schools, but extremely competitive to break into. Admin make 10-14K US per month.
Lower tier pay about 3-4K, but the cost of living in BKK has gone up significantly. Fine dining at high end restaurants is more expensive than the US.

Re: Take it or wait for a better one.
Depends on how competitive the second school is. If it is one of the top 3 Sg schools, you may not get a job right after the first or second interview. You can ask them to reschedule, but if they refuse 8K is not a great salary as most school health insurance policies are sub-par and you'll be paying out of your pocket. 2K housing is meagre.

Re: GRC
GRC has more of a casual dating approach where the admin is just warming up before they finalise their choices in BKK and London. If you are an expert teacher and get hired, that's more of you being an outlier. A grass-is-greener approach applies to leadership teams, too.

Re: Compensation
What about the rumours about Exec leadership making 400K+ in SE Asia? This number sounds higher than corporate CEOs in mid-cap firms.

Compensation
There is always a comparison between faculty and senior leadership salaries and this is one of the key factors causing friction between the two groups. What do you all think is a reasonable difference (x3 or x4) between the salaries of a principal or head of school and teachers should be if we're looking at tier 1 schools with 1000 - 1500 students in a big Asian city? No school names please.

Re: COVID, 21/22 Job Season & You?
Being part of the hiring committee, I can say we're cutting down on our recruitment for the next school year. Most of our teachers are staying put and I think it's a sane decision. For teachers who have no choice, I'd say look at the track record of your prospective employer, read the latest reviews, speak to a couple of current teachers on how they are managing in bringing new teachers into their country before you take the plunge. The chances of a second or third wave and another lock down can't be ruled out and it's already happening in some parts of the world. Several established schools are already giving the Search online fair a miss this year. Reputed schools in big cities usually have the backing of local embassies, and strong links to ministries of education and labor and they do a fairly decent job with paperwork. These schools also have the financial muscle to bear additional expenses and they wouldn't mind paying for those expensive flights and freight.
On the personal front, I will be focusing my energies on up-skilling as I transition to the next level in my career.

Re: 2021/2022 Advice
Tier 2/3 schools in China and Middle East will be your best bet. 21-22 will be a tough year as you will be competing with experienced and laid off folks who are eagerly waiting to grab all the good or fairly decent jobs. Make sure your cover letter is customised and rock-solid. Good luck.
