Honor

Honor is a two way street. When a verbal offer is made and the contract offered wants you to break the law by entering the country illegally to work I would think the agreement is void.

For many the agreement originates in the United States so I would think the law would apply there.

It is complicated and not black and white.

Verbal Agreements

Having had the experience of getting into a world of trouble over a verbal agreement and then backing out once the contract was mailed and read (conditions were different than the verbal agreement) I have had much time to think and research the topic of contract law and came upon The Statute of Frauds.
By no means am I purporting to be any kind of expert but my research has brought me to the following among other sections of the law:

Contracts which cannot be performed within one year must be in writing. A verbal agreement does not always commit one if the written contract is not signed. There must be a meeting of the minds.

Since most schools offer two year positions will they fall under this statute? Have some of the recruitment agencies been skirting this?
I don't know. Anyone out there want to venture an opinion?

In any event, who are they trying to fool?! Sorry, what i mean to say is what good is the statement without presenting the steps one may take to register a complaint or follow-up. I couldn't seem to find a suggested list of consequences either.

If might be worthwhile for teachers to send in some suggestions to these agencies or simply pose the question of exactly how their pact works.

I wonder what type of discrimination? Is Blackballing a form?

New service

My wife and I are very pleased with the effort of these anonymous persons. I believe the industry needs to go forward with the tools of technology and the WEB 2.0 provides them. After all weren't they designed to make life easier and cheaper? I am willing to take the risk.

A union or organization would be great for teachers, wouldn't it be nice to show up at a recruitment fair and see a table with our teaching representative present to assist us with contracts and ISS?

How about pestering the NEA or your respective legislature, New Jersey does have an attorney general perhaps if enough complaints are recorded the business practices of ISS will be investigated.

Jane Larsen is a but a symptom of an industry that needs some regulating.

Cheers.

Jane Larson

It has been too long and I must ask. Has Jane Larson actually left the folds of ISS? If so was it to mitigate the potential liability ISS faces from the many burned, blackballed and otherwise illtreated job seekers?

The way International Education goes I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Ms. Larson received some "Plum" job to reward her past activities.

Thank you ISR for giving teachers a voice. the void is beginning to be filled and any criticisms appear to be from administrators and their supporters trying to dodge responsibilty for their actions.

We as educators are professionals and it is time that the associations which feed off of us begin to take responsibility for their actions / inaction as well as to represent our interests and not just those of the international schools and admnistrators. The time for veiled threats from recruitment agencies must end.

In the late 1960's, Dr. Lawrence J. Peter and Raymond Hull published their book on business management, specifically on leadership in the workplace. It was the author's conclusion that individuals rise to their level of incompetence. Thus the coining of the term now known as " The Peter Principle".

Perhaps the "minority " in question was a recipient of this. It has been said by some our current leadership exhibits many of the same qualities here in the USA. It can certainly beappliedto International Education.

As for International education I have seen excellent leadership and very poor leadership. I think that is why a forum like this is a good start to begin looking at our profession globally rather than individual incidents. I would assume that at the end of the day we are all in some agreeement that we are doing this not only for the exotic travel and other opportunities associated but to provide an excellent education for the students we work with.

Dithering on about choice of words really doesn't accomplish anything more than continuing to keep us unorganized. Be honest in what you state and don't couch your statements. If you read something that strikes a nerve wait awhile before responding.

expressing reality

I have heard the same expressed about SEARCH. Perhaps they are just reflecting the reality ofthe true feelings for candidates unlike the Feelgoods at ISS.

ISS organize

ISS didn't even notify us we were blackballed until our lawyer contacted them. It appears they think the market is so large that they can do anything to teachers.
