Re: Documents to gather / prepare?!? Other random advice

Thanks for the reply PG,

I will not have any contract when I go back to the US. Going back to the US in September for a week and will apply for jobs in November onward while im abroad.

Regarding references, so your saying I should just get them to send me a reference (in letter or email?) then scan it?

Then when I apply to schools they will just look at the letter or copy and call the reference for verification?

Should I even bother with transcripts? I went to like 6 different Universities and it would be an annoyance to gather all those.

Regarding the job search, I put together a list of recruiting agencies and job boards etc. Am I missing anything?

SearchAssociates.com
TIEOnline.com
ISS.edu
Schrole.com
TES.com/jobs
TeachingNomad.com
TeachAway.com
JoyJobs.com

Documents to gather / prepare?!? Other random advice

I am going back to the US in September and need to get everything lined up for my first IS gig hopefully next Fall.

What all should I do? (Apostile degree, CBC, transcripts etc etc)

Any random things I should take care of or set up?

Question regarding references. Can someone break down how many I should get. Can it be from any educator or admin, even ones that I have never worked with? Never had a teaching job, only done a short student teaching stint. Also, what is the format to get these references in, print, edocument, email, sealed etc?

Thanks.

Re: Question from a fresh International School Teacher

Congrats NoWhy on getting certified and finding numerous jobs.

A few questions for you. I did Teacher Ready also and got the middle school math license. Now I am wanting to add the high school license to it as well.

How was the high school exam? Anything tricky on the test? I am a little worried about the time. Seems like you have to rush the exam just to finish on time with the amount of questions. What study materials did you use? What should I focus on the most?

Also, where you only looking for schools in China? How did you go about the job hunt? I am planning either China (or the likes) or Middle East as my first stop.

I get the impression that these Asian kids are super smart in math and they would just breeze through a typical Western math curriculum. Is that true?

Looked at their site, says no atm fees nation wide? Is that only in the US or do they reimburse your atm fees anywhere in the world?

Whats is the best bank and money set up now a days for ITs?

For Americans,

Wondering what the best bank(s) to use? Sending money? Credit Card? etc

Currently using a online checking BOA account linked to a Charles Schwab checking account which I think is free (reimbursed) atm fees anywhere in the world.

Re: What would you choose?

How do schools get by with offering salaries of 20k? A non educator could go to Korea and babysit kids with no lesson planning or extra duties and make more than that with a free apartment.

Re: Help me optimize my IT path

You are gonna need a decent amount of money to go do ESL in Latin America AND complete the Alternative Certification Program.

For example (rough figures)

500 - Flight there
500 - Emergency Exit flight back
1,000 - Two month start up funds
6,000 - ACP cost

Total - 8,000 dollars

This does not include money to fly back to the US to take the required exams for licensing. Add another 500-1,000 on to the total. If you do TeacherReady you will have to go back to the US for your test. TeachNow has some international test locations but I am not sure if any are in Latin America.

If I were you I would go to Korea.

- Free flight there
- Free studio apartment
- Health Insurance
- End of contract bonuses (3,000 dollars)
- Can save 1,000 dollars each month
- Set easy schedule which will make it easy for you to do your ACP
- Numerous International Schools for completing your field work

As for what subject, id would def do HS Math. Will be a lot more marketable.

Re: Manila, Philippines

For a single male, no other country comes close to the Philippines in terms of a dating / social life.

Would love to live there.

Only headache is the traffic for me. Def try to live close to your school.

Area around Seoul Foreign School?

I will be moving to the neighborhood where Seoul Foreign School is located. Wondering if someone could break this area down for me. Essential shops, cool restaurants, gyms, parks, etc. Overall feel for the area. Thanks Ive always lived in 2nd tier cities outside of Seoul so I am thrilled to finally be moving to the big city. No more boring nights and limited options!

Re: What is the ideal/best path to becoming an IT?

Just checked TeachNow's website. Seems almost identical to TeacherReady.

9 months
6,000 dollars
8 Modules
Culminating Final Student Teaching

Any Teach Now people? Curious to how you would describe the amount of time commitment and difficulty of the work.

TeacherReady was very easy and didn't really take a lot of time commitment that I remember.

If someone lives outside the US though, seems TeachNow is def the better option due to being able to take the Praxis abroad.

Wonder how TeachNow compares to TeacherReady with regards to price and time frame.

Its a pain in the butt to have to come back to the US to take those exams.

Re: Marieh- Question For You (FTCE Math 9-12 Exam)

Wow, certified in Physics also. Is Physics a lot of math? Maybe I should study that instead of Chemistry after knocking out this Math 6-12 exam.

I think what I am gonna do is take as many final exams of the subject areas I can find then look online for the questions I do not know. Take about 5 college algebra and algebra 2 exams. Then take some final geometry exams. Pre-Cal, Stats etc. Seems it would be faster than going through textbooks and what not.

From reading online it seems the FTCE doesnt really go in depth, mostly just the basics of each area. I think I will devote most of my time after the test in learning Calculus just incase I have to teach it out the gate lol.

Re: Marieh- Question For You (FTCE Math 9-12 Exam)

Good to hear about there not being many conceptual questions as those can appear subjective.

You didnt have any issues finishing on time?

Seems you thought the test wasnt very difficult and not tricky.

What curriculum is your IS using? What classes do you teach?
