Re: Job Fair - Bethesda

Is Bethesda a good fair for newly qualified teachers looking for a decent 2nd tier school?

I saw that. Unfortunately, I don't have my certification yet so I'm just thinking ahead for next year. However its good to see that a lot of positions remain unfilled relatively late in the hiring season.

Re: How competitive is Quality Schools International?

Thats good to hear, I wouldn't mind Kazakhstan. But would a newbie have a shot at their Kyiv campus?

How competitive is Quality Schools International?

QSI seems to have bad publicity around here but given eastern Europe is my preferred destination, they could be a good way to go for me. Do they hire newly qualified teachers?

Re: How much math does a high school math teacher need?

Sid, thanks for your input. If I was determined to do it, would a m.a in math education be the best route? It would include about 30 hours of post-calculus math coursework...

How much math does a high school math teacher need?

For for those of us who didn't major in math, is there a rough guideline on the coursework needed to be a confident upper level HS math teacher? The math cert exam in my state only goes up to basic calculus which is where my academic experience ends. It seems you would have to know a lot more if you're teaching IB HL or AP.

Re: Transitioning from ESL to international schools

Monkey, thanks for that info. Another question that I'd like throw out there to ESL teachers who have made the jump from institutes/Unis to international schools...Are you happy about the move? Aside from younger students obviously, what are some of the differences? ie...Work load, colleagues, professional development, benefits, etc.?

Re: Transitioning from ESL to international schools

Shadowjack,

Thank you for that detailed response. I am trying to gauge whether getting the state license is worth it for ESL. It seems like you're saying ESL teaching in a Uni is an overall better gig unless you prefer working with a younger age group. Am I reading that right?

p.s Where do uni ESL teachers make 5 grand a month for 8-12 hours a week?:-)

Re: Transitioning from ESL to international schools

Briz,

Did the guy with an MA in Tesol find a position as a ESL teacher in an international school? It's something I am considering and I was curious as to the job prospects. I am getting mixed signals. Some people here have written that ESL teachers in Iinternational schools aren't taken seriously, get paid less,etc...Yet, it seems to be in high demand...even for the DODEA. What gives?

Does QSI hire learning support?

QSI doesn't seem to get the most favorable reviews around here but I am fascinated by their off the beaten path locations. I am in the process of getting SPED certified so this all 1-2 years down the road but I was wondering if anyone knew...?
What about single expat guys wanting to meet single expat women from North America, UK, Australia, New Zealand?
Why on earth would you want to do that?! The whole point of becoming an IT is to dodge those feminist wastelands...:P

Some great suggestions so far. Crgallen, tell me more about Russia. What do you like about it? Which city are you in? I have heard good things but that it also pretty expensive.

Best countries/cities for single male teachers

I will probably take heat for this, but the location is more important to me than the school. Given that, what are some good places for the bachelor IT? I am looking for the following:

-Rich unrestrictive culture(aka not the Middle East)

-Good nightlife/social options

-Low cost of living w/decent savings potential

-Preferably nice weather but that's not a deal breaker...

I would be curious about this too. Aramco gets a lot of discussion on this board but there must be other oil companies with schools out there.
